Unity in Sound Community Choir is a women’s choir based in Ipplepen. Members are a mix of ages, life stages and backgrounds.
On International Women’s Day on 8th March the choir looked back at a brilliant experience we had in November 2023. Our ‘flash mob’ performance of ‘You Don’t Own Me’, in collaboration with the Standing Tall Partnership and Make Amends Restorative Justice, raised awareness of domestic abuse. It was an important thing for us to do because, as well as making music, the choir is an amazing community of women supporting women, and through it strong connections have been formed.
As we enter our 10th year as Unity in Sound, we are fundraising to make possible all the events we are planning to mark the end of our first decade, and would love to secure sponsorship. Are there any local businesses, perhaps run by and/or providing services for women, who would like to be part of our journey? If you are interested, please get in touch with our Chair, Megan Sewell: megray50@hotmail.com.
Whilst we, unlike many other choirs, managed to continue through the pandemic, our membership numbers have never quite recovered to pre-pandemic levels. So we are also on the lookout for new members, with or without singing experience, to join our inclusive and welcoming community of women and enjoy the social and mental health benefits of singing with others.
If you are interested, come along to St Andrew’s Church Hall on a Thursday evening around 7.15, or come to one of our upcoming gigs to see and hear us in action, and grab us afterwards for a chat. Our planned gigs over the next couple of months are:
- Saturday 5th April, 11am – clock tower / Austin’s department store in Newton Abbot
- Monday 5th May, in the afternoon – Denbury May Fayre
We are a non-audition ladies choir rehearsing between 7.30 and 9.30 on Thursday evenings in St Andrew’s Church Hall Ipplepen. Some of our ladies sing very low (our basses), whilst those who sing in the higher registers make up our top soprano section. Most of us are somewhere in between! If you have no idea what your vocal range is, or have never sung before but would like to give it a go, just come along and we will figure out which section is for you.
If you would prefer to chat with someone before coming, you can send us a message via our Facebook page or call 07754 949301. Otherwise just come along to the hall around 7.15 on Thursday evening and we will sort you out!
Our aim is to grow our numbers. We’re a non-audition choir singing a range of different parts so there’s sure to be something to suit every voice. So whether you’re a total novice, rusty or an experienced singer, why not come and try Unity in Sound Community Choir – we’d be delighted to see you. MORE…
